Krapp’s Last Tape 2024

On his sixty-ninth birthday, Krapp (Nick Birkinshaw), as has become his custom, hauls out his old tape recorder to review one of the earlier years, and make a new recording commenting on the events of the previous twelve months.

Whilst his younger self speaks to reveal an idealistic fool, will the passage of time reveal the kind of fool he has become?

Tonight is a beginning, built on love: the love for a play; the love between good friends to make impossible things possible; and a reminder to all of us to reach out and give the greatest gift – our time – to those we care for and love: for all the good that they do, care homes can be lonely places.

In conversation with Elinor Randle, the new Artistic Director of Unity Theatre, Graeme reflected on what was different about his revival of the work this time around:

“I suppose it’s informed in some way by the fact that dementia is now an everyday matter, whereas it never occurred to me before. When I staged it previously, it had no relevance with what was going on in the world, it was just a poetic play. As a result of my condition, I will suddenly freeze or stand on the spot and shuffle, I thought (not hoping to upset Mr Beckett) that I would find a moment to put that in.”

  • Phenomenal… I couldn’t take my eyes off Nick Birkinshaw the entire time
